Mental Health: Facts

  • 1 in 4 people in the UK have been diagnosed with a form of mental health, that’s 17.1 million people.
  • The NHS spends around £14.3 billion every year treating people with Mental Health issues.
  • 10% of all children in the UK suffer from a clinically diagnosed Mental Health Disorder.
  • 22.3 thousand women and 10.3 thousand men in the UK died from Mental Health issues in the last year.
  • Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) was invented in 1938 and still in use today. It involves inducing a seizure with electricity to treat Mental Health. About 1,500 patients a year in the UK are treated by ECT without their consent under the Mental Health Act. The vast majority of people with mental health problems are no more likely to be violent than anyone else. Most people with mental illness are not violent and only 3-5% of violent acts can be attributed to individuals living with a mental illness.
  • In fact, people with severe mental illnesses are over 10 times (1000%) more likely to be victims of violent crime than the general population.
